Use a small representative file first. Confirm which organization and record type you are importing into, and keep an unchanged copy of the source file.
Import safely
- Open Companies or Contacts and use its import/export menu. Import into the matching record type.
- Review the destination fields and mapping offered by the importer. A similar-looking column name is not proof that it has the same meaning.
- Check a few rows containing real examples of your source formats: email, dates, numbers and any required fields. Create needed custom fields through the supported settings before relying on them in a migration.
- Complete the small import and inspect the resulting records and relationships before moving to a larger file.
- If your deployment uses an operator-led migration or assisted mapping workflow, review its proposed mapping before authorizing writes. A suggested plan has not imported anything by itself.
Check and recover
For rejected rows, read the reported row and field error. Check missing required values, invalid email or date formats, unsupported columns and fields your role cannot write.
For apparent duplicates, compare the actual records and identifiers. Do not assume every importer uses the same duplicate rule. Re-running the entire file can repeat records that succeeded on the first attempt.
For records that appear missing after a successful import, clear list filters and check the current organization and visibility before importing again.
When to contact the team
Include the record type, import time, error text, failed row numbers and whether any rows succeeded. Share only the small relevant sample through your approved support channel rather than attaching a complete customer export.
